Product Hunt launch video: the rules, the length and what to show

Product Hunt has a few hard rules for the video in a launch, and no rule at all for the thing that matters most, which is what the video says. Here are both.

The short version. Product Hunt only plays YouTube videos, from the full link, and the video must not be private. The gallery needs at least two images at 1270x760. A launch goes live at 12:01 AM Pacific time. Keep the video under a minute, and say what your product gives back before you show how it works.

The rules, from Product Hunt itself

These come from Product Hunt's own help page on posting a product. They are short, and getting one wrong means an empty player on launch day.

What Product Hunt says
Video host"For videos, only YouTube links are supported."
The linkIt must be the full address. Shortened links will not load.
VisibilityUpload in advance and confirm the video is not set to private.
Gallery images1270x760 is the recommended size. The gallery is not shown until it has two or more images.
ThumbnailSquare, 240x240 recommended. A GIF must be under 3 MB.
Going live"The site operates on 24-hour periods in PST so your post will go live on the site at 12:01 AM PST."
First comment"Be sure to kick off the conversation with a comment about the product!"

So a Loom or Vimeo link will not do: put the video on YouTube, copy the address from the browser bar and not from the share button, and open it in a private window to be sure a stranger can watch it.

How long it should be

Product Hunt gives no length. The best data we know on the question is Wistia's 2026 State of Video report, drawn from more than 13 million videos: those under a minute averaged a 52% engagement rate, and product videos under a minute averaged 50%. The typical viewer watches about half.

On a launch page that half is generous. Someone is scrolling a list of products and yours has a few seconds. Our advice, and it is advice and not a measurement: 30 to 60 seconds, with the claim in the first ten.

What to show: an argument, not a tour

The common mistake is to post a walkthrough. A walkthrough is a demo: it shows how the product works, step by step, to someone who already wants it. A launch video has another job. It has to make a stranger want it.

So start from answers, not from a recording:

  1. Who is it for? One kind of person, named in the first line.
  2. What does today cost them? In hours or in money, with a number if you have an honest one.
  3. What is the one claim? What your product gives back. One sentence, large on screen.
  4. What are the three proofs? Three short moments of the real product, a few seconds each. This is the only place the interface appears.
  5. What is the one action? A price, an address, a button. End on it.

The product is on screen for seconds, behind a sentence. That feels wrong the first time you cut it. It is also how we build launch films at Framefly. If you want the step-by-step version too, make it a second video and put it lower on your own site.

The night before

  • The video is on YouTube, not private, and plays in a window where you are signed out.
  • You pasted the full YouTube address, not a short link.
  • The gallery has at least two images at 1270x760, and the first one makes sense on its own.
  • The thumbnail is square, and if it is a GIF it is under 3 MB.
  • Your first comment is written and ready to post.
  • You know what 12:01 AM Pacific time is where you live.

Common questions

Can I use a Vimeo or Loom link for my Product Hunt video?

No. Product Hunt's help page says that for videos, only YouTube links are supported. The link must also be the full address, because shortened links will not load.

What size should Product Hunt gallery images be?

Product Hunt recommends 1270x760 for gallery images, and the gallery is only shown once it has two or more. The thumbnail is separate: square, 240x240 recommended, and under 3 MB if it is a GIF.

How long should a Product Hunt launch video be?

Product Hunt sets no length. Wistia's 2026 data shows videos under a minute average a 52% engagement rate, meaning the typical viewer watches about half, so 30 to 60 seconds with the main claim in the first ten is a safe target.

What time does a Product Hunt launch go live?

At 12:01 AM Pacific time. Product Hunt's help page says the site operates on 24-hour periods in PST, and a scheduled post goes live at that minute.
